George William Kipp Jr. was born on
April 13, 1822, in York County, Pennsylvania, one of three sons of George
Kipp Sr. and Elizabeth Neff Kipp. His family moved to Montgomery
Township, Richland County, Ohio in 1830 when he was about seven.
Montgomery Township later became a part of Ashland County when it was
formed in 1846.
ASHLAND COUNTY, OHIO
George Jr. grew up on the family farm
in Ashland County, Ohio. George William Kipp Jr. was married to
Sarah Wolf (1825 - 1906) on February 17, 1848. Sarah was
born on November 6, 1825, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, the daughter
of John Wolf Sr. and Mary Hawk. George and Sarah had two
children born in Montgomery Township, Ashland County, Ohio. They
were Benjamin Franklin (1849), and John Wilbert (1850). Benjamin
died the day he was born. In October 1852 George and Mary and George
Jr. moved to Olney, Richland County, Illinois.
RICHLAND COUNTY, ILLINOIS
George and Sarah had five more children
which were all born in Olney, Richland County, Illinois. They
were Mary Elizabeth (1853), Bartholomew (1858), Milton Henry (1858),
Martin Luther (1862), and William Emerson (1865). Bartholomew and Milton
died in infancy. The 1880 census lists an Etta Lutz (1870) as an adopted
daughter.
George who died on November 13, 1891
and Sarah who died on June 21, 1906 are both buried in lot 141 at the
Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney, Richland County, Illinois. In this
same lot Milton is buried. In addition, the first wife of their son
John W. Kipp, Laura, and an infant son are buried there. Bartholomew
Kipp is also buried in Haven Hill Cemetery but the location has not
been determined.
REAL ESTATE
George Kipp Jr. owned 172.5 acres of
land in Olney Township, Richland County, Illinois. About 130 acres
of which were cultivated. Those clearings and improvements were
made by him since he came to Olney.
CENSUS
1850 Census
The census of 1850 for Montgomery Township,
Ashland County, Ohio lists George Kipp Jr., age 26, and Sarah, age 24.
George’s occupation is listed as cooper and the value of his real
estate is noted as $200. A cooper is one who makes wooden barrels such
as those used for beer or wine. It was a specialized trade to cut the
wood so it was a tight fit. Iron rings held the wood sections
in place. No other household members are listed.
1860 Census
The 1860 census for Olney, Richland
County, Illinois lists George Kipp as age 38 and Sarah as age 34.
Children included in the household are John W, age 11, Mary E., age
8, and Milton H., age 2. Bartholomew was not listed. Both
Milton and Bartholomew died less than a year after the census was taken.
Occupation for George Jr. is listed as farmer. The value of his
real estate is listed as $2,280 and his personal estate at $753.
1870 Census
The 1870 census for Olney, Richland
County, Illinois lists George Kipp as age 47 and Sarah as age 44.
Children included in the household are John W, age 18, Mary E., age
17, Martin L., age 8, and William E., age 5. Occupation
for George Jr. is listed as farmer and for Sarah as keeping house.
The occupation for John W. is working on farm. The value of his
real estate is listed as $5,000 and his personal estate at $1,000.
1880 Census
The 1880 census for Olney, Richland
County, Illinois lists George Kipp as age 57 and Sarah as age 54.
Children included in the household are Martin L., age 18, and William
E., age 15. Etta Lutz is listed as an adopted daughter,
age 10. George’s occupation is listed as farmer, and Sarah’s
as keeping house.
1890 Census
Most of the 1890 Census was destroyed.
1900 Census
The 1900 census for Olney, Richland
County, Illinois lists Sarah Kipp, age 74, as a member of the John Mitchell
household. Her relationship to John Mitchell is listed as an aunt.
George Kipp Jr. died in 1891 so did not appear in this census.
Wills / Estates
Jacob Neff, in his last will and testament,
gave to his sisters, Catharine Neff Spangler, Martha Neff Knaub, and
Elizabeth Neff Kipp, each one-tenth part of the residual of his estate.
Where Elizabeth died after the making of the will and before the death
of Jacob Neff, her share of the estate passed to her children, John
Kipp, Jacob Kipp, and George Jr. Kipp. John Kipp and George Jr.
Kipp appointed Jacob Kipp, an attorney, to act on their behalf in the
estate settlement. The estate settlement took place in 1865 in
York County, Pennsylvania. John Kipp lived in Montgomery, Ohio,
Jacob Kipp, lived in Jasper County, Iowa, and George Jr. Kipp lived
in Richland County, Illinois at the time. It would be interesting
to know how the coordination of this estate took place. This estate
provided the sum of $4,170 total for the three sons of Elizabeth.
OTHER
George Kipp Jr. held the office of
Commissioner of Highways for six years.
